What may be the dream of prima donna who is standing alone in the beam of light surrounded by endless space of darkness? What may be the dream of dancer who is separating the space with powerful move? Probably the dream of ballet is to express freedom, controllable stream, physical space, cubic space and power, which is balanced by strong and weak, heavy and light. Time which has rhythm, speed and the expression of the soul, which have harmonized line in the vital power, and which looks slow, might be the dream of the ballet.

Ballet is a comprehensive stage art in which performers move in a rhythmical and continuous way from the beginning to the end. In each movement is expressed meeting and parting between music and people, between space and thing, and between people themselves. It is a movement created by human body and spirit. High level of dancing technique, magnificent stage setting and gorgeous costume are mixed harmoniously into classic ballet.
Those who want to realize such dream of ballet are sweating at the Universal Ballet Group stationed near the rear gate of the Childrens Grand Park at Neung-dong. The group is a western style ballet corps equipped with oriental spirits. They are the first professional ballet corps in Korea, and by performing Cinderella in July 1984, they set their first step in this barren land of ballet. Over 10 years since then, they have been striving to materialize the dream of Cinderella in the field of ballet.

After the virgin performance, guided by excellent art directors such as Adrian Dallas ? Daniel Levans ? Roy Tobias, the Universal Ballet Group performed perfectly such great works as Zigel, Copelia, Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty in Forest and others. They are continuing development of their artistic capabilities. Moreover, ballet Simcheong, which was performed as an invited work in Seoul Olympic Culture Festival in 1988, is a good mix of the eastern and western art styles. It is the first ballet made from classic Korean story, and it has special meaning by emphasizing the filial piety which is disappearing from our society.

The ballet group received the biggest applaud from the audience by performing Swan Lake jointly with the world-famous Kiroff Ballet Group of Russia. At the 10th anniversary of their formation, the Universal Ballet Group performed the whole acts of the Sleeping Beauty in the Forest for the first time in Asia, enhancing the degree of perfection of the work.

At present, the Universal Ballet Group is composed of 57 members including 8 chief dancers, 6 soloists, 4 demi-soloists, and 39 others. They have been making continued efforts to develop Koreas ballet, by inviting world-renowned teachers and dancers, running ballet academy to educate young talents and establishing a ballet center.
